Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 & 2: The Waterways of Nyerere (Selous)

We fly from Arusha to the Mtemere Airstrip, where your Asilia guide awaits. Your home for the next two nights is Roho ya Selous, set in the heart of a predator-rich ecosystem. Nyerere is famous for its variety: spend your mornings on a traditional game drive and your afternoons on a boat safari, gliding past pods of hippos and basking crocodiles. For those seeking a deeper connection, a walking safari offers a rare chance to track wildlife on foot.

  • Key Wildlife: Wild Dog, Lion, Leopard, Elephant, and 400+ Bird Species.

  • Experience: Game Drives, Boat Safaris, and Guided Bush Walks.

  • Accommodation: Roho ya Selous

After breakfast, a bush flight takes you west to the rocky landscapes of Ruaha. You will stay at Jabali Ridge, a stunning lodge built into the granite boulders. Ruaha is a wilderness of scale, focused around the Great Ruaha River. This is a land of giants—massive elephant herds and oversized lion prides—where the arid landscape provides an authentic, “old-world” safari feel that remains untouched by mass tourism.

  • Key Wildlife: High concentrations of Lion, Cheetah, Jackal, and Lesser Kudu.

  • Experience: Tracking predators along the riverbanks and through baobab forests.

  • Accommodation: Jabali Ridge

Enjoy a final sunrise breakfast overlooking the golden plains of Ruaha. After a morning game drive en route to the airstrip, you will board your flight back to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). You’ll arrive with a fresh perspective on Africa, having visited its most prestigious and remote wilderness areas.

Expert Tips for the South Safari

  • Best Time to Go: The dry season (June to October) is spectacular, as animals congregate in massive numbers around the shrinking water sources of the Ruaha and Rufiji rivers.

  • What to Pack: Since this involves bush flights, soft-sided bags are required (weight limit 15kg). Bring light, neutral-colored clothing for walking safaris.

  • Photography: The light in Ruaha’s “lunar” landscape is a dream for photographers, especially at sunset among the ancient baobabs.
