Kilimanjaro Day Hike

The Marangu Hike to Mandara Huts

Tour Overview

The Marangu Day Hike is a perfect “taster” of Kilimanjaro. Starting at the Marangu Gate (1,860m), you will trek through a dense montane forest where the air is fresh and the biodiversity is staggering. The destination is the Mandara Huts (2,700m), a collection of A-frame wooden huts that serve as the first base for summit climbers. If weather permits, a short extra stroll leads to the Maundi Crater for panoramic views of Northern Tanzania and Kenya.

This day hike takes you through the lush, vibrant rainforest of the Marangu Route—the oldest and most famous path on the mountain. Led by our expert Uisso Adventures guides, you’ll reach the Mandara Huts and the stunning Maundi Crater before returning to the base in time for dinner.

Trip Highlights

  • The Rainforest Zone: Walk beneath a canopy of ancient trees, giant ferns, and hanging moss.

  • Exotic Wildlife: Spot Blue Monkeys and the iconic black-and-white Colobus Monkeys.

Detailed Itinerary

Departure from Moshi

Our Uisso Adventures vehicle picks you up from your hotel for a scenic 1-hour drive through coffee and banana plantations to the Marangu Gate.

After finalizing park permits, we enter the Kilimanjaro National Park. The trail is well-maintained and winds through a stunning rainforest. Your guide will point out rare orchids and the unique birdlife of the region.

We reach the Mandara Huts (2,700m) for a well-deserved picnic lunch. After eating, we take a short 15-minute walk to the Maundi Crater. On a clear day, you can see the towering Kibo Peak in the distance and the border of Kenya to the East.

We begin our trek back down through the forest. Gravity makes the return journey faster, but keep an eye out for the wildlife that often emerges in the afternoon shadows.

We reach the Marangu Gate, where you’ll sign out of the park. Our driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha.
