Ngorongoro Crater Day Trip Safari

Eighth Wonder of the World

Tour Overview

The Ngorongoro Crater is a geographic miracle. Formed millions of years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, it now serves as a self-sustaining sanctuary for Africa’s most iconic wildlife.

We take you 600 meters down from the lush crater rim to the grassy floor, where over 25,000 large mammals reside. It is the most reliable place in Tanzania to witness the “Big Five” in a single afternoon. Here your chance of seeing the Big 5 is high, but not guaranteed that you will all 5.

Because the animals remain in the crater year-round, every season offers spectacular, up-close sightings.

Trip Highlights

  • The Rhino Sanctuary: The best opportunity in Northern Tanzania to spot the rare and endangered Black Rhino.

  • Predator Action: Witness one of the densest populations of lions and spotted hyenas in Africa.

  • The Descent: Experience the thrill of the winding 600m descent into the heart of the caldera.

  • Lake Magadi: Observe thousands of flamingos and pods of hippos in the crater’s central alkaline lake.

  • Giant Tuskers: Spot ancient “bull” elephants with some of the largest tusks remaining on the continent.

Detailed Itinerary

Departure & The Highlands

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Arusha or Moshi, climbing away from the city and into the lush, mist-covered Ngorongoro Highlands. As the road winds through high-altitude rainforests and coffee plantations, you’ll arrive at the official gate and proceed to the breathtaking Crater Viewpoint.

Once on the floor, you enter a prehistoric world where over 25,000 animals roam freely. You will spend the day traversing diverse habitats, from the golden savannahs where lions and hyenas prowl to the shaded Lerai fever tree forest, a sanctuary for elephants and the elusive leopard.

A highlight of the drive is visiting the alkaline waters of Lake Magadi to see flamingos and the Ngoitokitok Springs, where you can enjoy a picnic lunch while watching hippos wallow nearby.

As the afternoon light begins to shift across the caldera walls, we begin our ascent back to the rim. This final climb offers one last panoramic view of the ecosystem you’ve just explored, providing a perfect moment for final photographs. Once back at the top, we exit the conservation area and begin the descent from the highlands, arriving back in Arusha or Moshi by early evening with memories of one of the most concentrated wildlife encounters on Earth.
