Detailed Itinerary

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi for rest, briefing, and final gear check.

After a drive to the gate for formalities, we hike through undisturbed, dense forest that winds gently toward our first camp. Elevation: 2,100m to 2,650m. Distance: 6km | Time: 3-4hrs.

We emerge from the rainforest into a savannah of tall grasses and volcanic rock. After crossing mountain streams and rolling hills, we reach Shira Ridge with first views of Kibo. Elevation: 2,650m to 3,610m. Distance: 8km.

We spend the day exploring the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on earth, with an optional acclimatization hike to Shira Cathedral and the Lent Hills. Elevation: 3,610m to 3,850m. Distance: 11km.

The trail heads southeast toward the towering Lava Tower. After lunch at high altitude, we descend into the Barranco Valley, essential for proper acclimatization. Elevation: 3,850m to 4,600m then to 3,900m.

We climb the steep but non-technical Barranco Wall for incredible glacier views, then continue through valleys to Karanga Camp. Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m. Distance: 5km.

The trail connects with the Mweka route as we ascend through rocky alpine desert toward Barafu Camp, resting to prepare for the midnight summit bid. Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m.

We begin our ascent in the dark, reaching the crater rim at Stella Point for sunrise, then continue to Uhuru Peak before descending to Mweka Camp. Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m then down to 3,100m.

A final descent through the lower forest brings us to Mweka Gate, where we receive our certificates, then continue to Mweka Village for a celebratory transfer back to your hotel in Moshi.
