Shira 7-Day Climb

7 days Camping route, starts at high altitude
The Shira Route is unique because it utilizes a vehicle to transport you through the forest zone, dropping you off at the Morum Barrier at over 3,400m. From here, you walk across the Shira Plateau — one of the most beautiful high-altitude expanses on earth. This route shares the same spectacular "Southern Circuit" as Lemosho and Machame, offering world-class scenery and a high success rate. Best suited for trekkers who have spent time at altitude recently or are confident in their body's ability to adjust quickly.

Detailed Itinerary

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi for rest, briefing, and final gear check.

After park formalities at Londorossi Gate, we drive to the Morum Barrier to begin trekking in the open moorland — a short, gentle hike to find your rhythm at altitude. Elevation: ~3,400m to 3,500m. Distance: 4km.

We traverse the ancient volcanic floor of the plateau, heading toward the base of the main peaks, with panoramic views of Kibo. Elevation: 3,500m to 3,840m. Distance: 7km.

We follow the "climb high, sleep low" strategy, ascending to the dramatic Lava Tower before descending into sheltered Barranco Camp. Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m then down to 3,976m.

A scramble up the famous Barranco Wall rewards us with glacier views, then the trail rolls across hills and valleys to Karanga. Elevation: 3,976m to 3,995m. Distance: 5km.

A steady ascent through stark alpine desert to Barafu "Base Camp," with an early dinner and rest before the midnight summit attempt. Elevation: 3,995m to 4,673m.

Starting around midnight, we climb through the arctic zone to Stella Point by sunrise, then push to Uhuru Peak before a long descent to Mweka Camp. Elevation: 4,673m to 5,895m then down to 3,068m.

A relaxed descent through lush rainforest to the park gate, receiving summit certificates before driving back to Moshi for a hot shower and celebration.
