Cycle Around Mount Kilimanjaro

7 days Strong legs and a bit of grit required
The Kilimanjaro 360 is a 7-day loop that takes you all the way around the base of Africa's highest peak. You'll cover 407km on a mix of red-dirt trails, rocky farm tracks, and a few stretches of tarmac — moving from the thick, wet forests of the Chagga people to the dry, open plains where the Maasai graze their cattle. Most people only see one side of Kilimanjaro as they hike to the top. This ride is different — you get to see the mountain grow and change every day as you pedal around it. Requires strong saddle endurance (5-8 hours a day for 7 days), comfort with red-dirt corrugations and loose gravel, and around 5,690m of total climbing including a push to 3,872m on the Shira Plateau.

Detailed Itinerary

We start at Kidia, the oldest missionary site on the mountain, pedaling into thick rainforest where Black-and-White Colobus monkeys watch from above. Distance: 30km. Time: approx. 4-5 hours.

Through a tropical world of coffee, avocado, and mango trees, the forest opens into savannah with views of Lake Chala on the Kenya border, before a downhill sprint into Usseri. Distance: 55km.

We ride right along the international border, finishing through "cathedrals" of towering pine trees with Mawenzi peak standing guard above. Distance: 35km.

The land changes completely as we enter the wide-open West Kilimanjaro plains, where Maasai warriors herd cattle across a high-altitude desert. Distance: 60km.

A "Game Ride" starting at 6:00 AM to catch animals at their most active, moving quietly on two wheels closer to giraffes, zebras, and elephants than any car. Distance: 45km total.

Kilimanjaro behind you and Mount Meru directly in front, we glide through Maasai homesteads and finish at Osiligilai for "Maasai TV" — ancient legends shared by the elders. Distance: 50km.

We complete the loop, crossing the Sanya Plains and the Weruweru River, finishing back in Moshi for a well-earned celebratory drink. Distance: 60km.
