Rongai 6-Day Climb

6 days Small groups and solo climbers
The Rongai Route is the only Kilimanjaro route that approaches the mountain from the remote northern side, near the Kenyan border. Known for its gentle slopes, quieter trails, and wilderness feel, this 6-day itinerary is perfect for climbers who want a less crowded experience while maintaining a strong chance of reaching the summit. The route descends via the Marangu trail, giving you varied landscapes and comfortable hut facilities on the way down. Best for: climbers seeking fewer crowds, first-time trekkers wanting a steady ascent, travelers who value solitude and nature.

Detailed Itinerary

Transfer from Kilimanjaro International Airport to your hotel in Moshi for overnight rest, briefing, and equipment check.

Drive to Marangu Gate for registration, then continue by road to Nale Moru, the starting point of the Rongai Route. Gentle walk through farmland and pine forest to the first camp on the edge of the moorland zone. Distance: 7km.

The trail climbs steadily toward Kibo, passing Second Cave (3,450m). As vegetation thins, panoramic views open up. Overnight near Kikelwa Cave, close to a mountain stream. Distance: 11km.

A shorter but steeper climb leads through grassy slopes to Mawenzi Tarn, spectacularly set beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. Afternoon acclimatizing in this dramatic high-altitude environment. Distance: 6km.

Continue ascending on the eastern side of Kibo, crossing the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Reach Kibo Hut after 4-5 hours and rest in preparation for the midnight summit attempt.

Wake around 11:30 PM and begin the ascent under the stars, passing Hans Meyer Cave before the steep zigzags to Gillman's Point on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak. Descend to Kibo Hut then Horombo Hut for overnight.

Descend through the rainforest past Mandara Hut to Marangu Gate. Sign out and receive your summit certificate — green for Gillman's Point or gold for Uhuru Peak — before driving back to Moshi.
